Foreign investment has been increasing in Honduras, especially in the last couple of years.  The number of foreign real estate purchases is expected to multiply in the coming years.  This situation has made Honduras government put more emphasis on the promotion of Tourism, and has implemented laws in order to attract foreign investment.  Most foreigners come from US and Canada to places like the Bay Islands of  Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja. For industrial and commercial real estate investments most choose to go to San Pedro Sula, which is considered to be the industrial capital of Honduras.  Here, large industrial companies receive special benefits (duty free, tax free, etc.)
Honduras law makes Honduras Land acquisition easier for investors. Great opportunities for investments are available in Honduras, but in this country just like in the US., foreigners need to do a little more than just land and live here. There are several types of residencies you can qualify for in order to be able to invest in the country.

1. INVESTOR – This category of residency requires an investment of $50,000US or more. You would need to present a project description explaining how this investment would benefit Honduras, a three-year timeline for investment, and proof of having transferred a minimum of $25,000US into Honduras at the time of your application. In addition, you will also need to make a cash deposit of $5,000US in the Honduras’s Central Bank to guarantee the investment.

 2. RETIREE (Pensionado) – For this type of residency you would need to show that you have at least $1500 US per month income from outside Honduras  coming from a government or financial institution, or business pension fund or personal funds  (This income is not taxed). Processing time is about six months. Benefits include the importation of personal belongings, without paying duties.

3. RENTISTA (Renter)– For this type of residency you would need to have a monthly income of $2,500US or more. This income must be from sources other than employment ( rental properties, investment dividends, interest).
